Skymouse,
Thanks for the detailed writeup. Everything you said makes sense and I am glad that you are doing the change as it will provide a more stable and reliable platform for your webcams. I know that H.264 is the future and using the Microsoft Windows Media format has reached the end of its life. Also, for those of us who choose to use MacOS and other platforms, this will provide us with a much better access to the webcams.
I also know that I have friends who have worked as programmers for some major webcam websites and they all have moved to flash baised H.264 for their video format as it provides the best format for transmitting video and audio over the Internet.
I am glad that you are looking in to upgrading your Internet connection that you are using for your studio as I would hate to have that be the weak link that is causing the audio problems that seem to come up from time to time.
One thing to note is that I did a traceroute to see if there where problems between my computer (West Coast USA Comcast ISP) and your londonlink.net server (UK) and did find that there was one router that was getting overloaded so I know that there are parts of this that no matter what you do it is up to the ISP's to have good peering agreements, big enough pipes and fast enough routers or it will not work well for us in the USA.
Once again, thanks for all of your hard work as I am aware of how much work it is to create and maintain a top quality website.
