Starting from our webcam on Sat, 04 Jul 2010, we will be using our new webcam server.
The new server works in a technically different way from our previous systems. We no longer use Windows Media Services, and you do not need to use a player (such as Windows Media Player or VLC). The new system uses H.264 encoding, and the webcam is viewed in a Flash application embedded on our webcam page.
In order for this to work properly, you need several things:
Install or ugrade to the latest versions of Java (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp) and Flash (http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash). We recommend you to use these free downloads before doing anything else.
It is advised that when you install or upgrade Java or Flash, you do so using the same web browser that you're going to use for watching the webcam.
An Internet connection that is fast enough to reliably receive our stream. Starting in July 2010, the bandwidth requirement (video + audio) is 809 kbps, which is well within the capabilities of all modern Internet connections. However, if you are in a remote are and using dial-up, or have a flaky wireless or satellite link, or your ISP has a slow or excessively busy network, you might not be able to obtain the video and audio without interruptions or loss of quality.
To test your speed, go here (http://whatismyip.com/speedtest/index.asp) and click on New York. The important number is your download speed. (Yes, Skymouse is an English company, but our streaming server is in New York in the U S of A.).
If you have any problems during the show, it is advisable to first ensure that your system meets the above requirements. Also make sure that you don't have any downloads or other Internet use in progress (including by other people, if you have a home or office network).
If the problem persists, please reboot your computer (in case some task was "stuck" and slowing down your computer's streaming ability), and then reconnect. Sometimes also just reconnecting to the Internet (or switching your router on and off) clears a temporary problem if you got a bad connection.
Remember to do the speed test mentioned above to see your speed to New York.
If you still have problems, please enter the chat room and ask for help. Often, someone on duty in the studio will be able to offer suggestions, and so will other people in the chat room. You can also contact Skymouse support (http://support.skymouse-productions.com/) to request help.
