Alberto Gonzales is a former Texas Supreme Court justice appointed by then-Gov. George W. Bush, and was named White House counsel by Bush last year.

He outraged liberals and civil rights activitsts when he warned Bush administration officials that they could be held accountable for "war crimes" if they did not agree with the conclusion of Justice Department attorneys that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to al Qaeda and Taliban detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He can expect tough questioning by Democrats in his confirmation hearings, but no one believes he won't win approval. He'll be the first Hispanic-American attorney general.
